Amazingly delicious East Indian Food. The spice levels we asked for were very accurate (which is something very important to me).  Decent service. They were very busy even for a Tuesday night. The location in a shabby strip mall is sad looking on the outside, but inside was nicely decorated and clean.

One of the better choices in the immediate area for Indian food. A close Indian friend of ours caters from this restaurant when the occasion calls for it. The lunch buffet is a good way to try the variety of dishes at mild.

As for the food I can’t complain – not only were the portions quite large, ensuring you had leftovers for the next day if you so desired, the dishes our group ordered were tasty & in my opinion very original, refreshing & unique!

For appy’s the group picked the Beef & Veg samosas and they weren’t too spicy!! Just the two appy’s were a perfect size for the three of us to share. The price for the two was no more than $4.95.

For the main dish we ordered as a group, one meat dish was the butter chicken @ $14.95 and the other was beef vindaloo @ $14.95. Plus 2 orders of rice at $4.95 each and Naan, this was enough for the whole group.

As for dessert… no one had any because we were all stuffed!
We were very impressed with the dessert menu because for the size of restaurant they had (which is quite cozy), they had at NUMBER options you could choose from.

Overall, Clay Oven had good food & we were able to stay under a reasonable budget even when buying drinks – it was about $25/per person including drinks. That’s pretty good in my books, not bad at all.
It was a good experience.
Check it out and decide for yourselves.

“Amazing food!”

Best indian food I’ve had in Calgary and service was excellent! The meal we ordered was full of flavour and piping hot. Butter chicken melted in my mouth. Can’t wait to go back.

“Best indian food in calgary”

Been coming here for many years now and the quality of food and customer service is always impeccable. This is our family’s favorite indian restaurant by far in Calgary (and we have pretty much tried all of them)

“Excellent restaurant for lunch or dinner in Calgary”

I’ve been dining at the Clay Oven restaurant in Calgary for at least 12 years and have never been disappointed. Because I work in NE Calgary, it’s a very convenient place for lunch. I usually go around 1 pm to ensure a table. The lunch buffet is delicious. The butter chicken and the naan bread are the best I’ve ever had. Our eldest son, who lives in Edmonton now, is begging us to bring him take out. We dined there yesterday and my wife raved about the rice pudding for dessert.

“”hole in the wall…””

We are a family that absolutely loves Indian food, and as such we try many different places. Clay Oven, recommended by friends of ours who were missionaries in Indian all their lives, is one of the very best we have come across yet.

Like any place we find that ordering off the menu is better than buffet and this is true of Clay Oven too. There are items on the menu that never seem to come up on the buffet; Bhindi Tori, the Biryani’s, etc. But, that being said, Clay Ovens lunch buffet is still awesome. These guys make the best Butter Chicken I have ever had. In fact it’s so good it has spoiled my kids on the Butter Chicken at most other places.

The owners are the cooks, and they are very nice people. On one visit with my wife’s sister and husband and kids they took our kids back into the kitchen and showed them the clay oven the use to do much of their cooking.

The 5 rating is given because these guys deserve it.

If you are looking for an Indian restaurant in Calgary this little “hole in the wall” restaurant (meaning a non box, non franchise place) as I like to call them, is fantastic. Highly recommend it!

Happy dining :)

“superb indian food”

As a British family we love hot spicy Indian/Pakistani food and to date this is the only restaurant that comes anywhere close to the standards we had come to expect in the UK. It may have taken us some time to find the Clay but having done so we never go anywhere else. Excellent food and service.

“Best Butter Chicken”

Looking for a variety of Curries or the Best Butter Chicken ever? Try out the Clay Oven in Calgary. Generous portions of Curry and Basmati Rice and Naan bread or Parathas. Small restaurant with big attitude on service. Reserve ahead and enjoy the cuisine.

“Authentic Indian, prepared very well”

We’ve been to India twice, and this is the closest we’ve come to finding food that reflects the spicing and flavours we found there. Garlic Naans are soft and warm; fish pakoras are amazingly tender; Beef Gosht is deliciously spicy and the Vindaloo is spicy of course, not just hot.

A meal for a family of four costs ~$120 (especially if you get a full sampling of veg/beef/chicken samosas), but well worth it. Quite a treat.

They were mentioning opening a second restaurant in Country Hills, dependent on zoning/construction of the new plaza. It will be nice to pre-order a meal to pick up on the way home!

“The best butter chicken!!!”

We will definitely be back for the butter chicken and more! The food was the best Indian cuisine I have ever tasted. We ordered the butter chicken, tandoori chicken with vegetables, saag paneer, naan bread, and vegetable samosas. All of it was delicious and filling. It was fresh tasting and not at all too heavy or greasy like some Indian restaurants. The price was quite reasonable for the amount of food that we ordered too.
The service was very good as well. The waitress was polite and efficient. The restaurant itself, though nothing special in its decor, was welcoming and comfortable as well. The bathrooms were modern and clean, but no baby change-table was available.

“Delicious!”

The Clay Oven is in my opinion, one of the best Indian food restaurants in all of Calgary. It is quite small and it is best to make a reservation because it tends to fill up very quickly. The food is absolutely amazing – the butter chicken is fantastic! They bring out this crispy bread to begin with and this really good dip. The also make great chai tea. Your food can take a little while to come out sometimes, but it is well worth the wait and I have always has excellent service here. Highly recommended.

Best Indian in Calgary hands down!

The butter chicken is the best I have ever had anywhere and the naan is soft, warm, and tasty. Also get the Mango Lassi. Awesome!!

Best Indian food in Calgary

My husband introduced me to this restaurant as he and his co-workers went there often for lunch. I was hooked once I tried it! I catered my husband’s 40th birthday and everything was amazing! Our guests loved the food too and now Clay Oven has more customers. It IS THE BEST IN CALGARY!!

Amazing

We’ve eaten here several times before. Admittedly not for a while because we live further away now. At any rate, we decided to order from their catering menu for our party of 20 people. The food was amazing, and everyone was so impressed! Great samosas with mint and tamarind sauces with generous portions, the Aloo Gobi reminded me of India and the butter chicken was one of the best I’ve had in nearly forever. I’d forgotten how good this dish can be after years of second rate Indian restaurants and the bland fast food type varieties you find in every mall these days. Kudos to the chef at Clay Oven! I would highly recommend them for dining in or their catering service.

Yay delivery

Now that I finally got some delivery, I’m sooooo happy. Awesome food that lasted for days in my fridge (I live alone so had to be prepared, knowing I’d be eating it for days). Not sure when they started delivery, but I’m thrilled I found out (via just-eat.ca). It was the best.

Still the best Indian food after 15 years

I started going to the clay oven over 15 years ago and it is still the best in Calgary. I love Indian food and have eaten at over 20 indian resturaunts in Calgary and nothing compares to the clay oven. The butter chicken has great flavour and the samosas are large and taste great. I have taken many friends here that have now become regulars. Thank you to the staff and cooks for so many great years of Indian food.

Simply the best…

Simply the best Indian food in Calgary and one of my favourite restaurants of all. Service is fast, the food is amazing, and the price is unbeatable.

via UrbanSpoon

Their mango lassis: sweet and slightly tart. The fish pakoras (basa), crisp on the outside, tender on the inside. Their lamb curry and butter chicken made me want to lick the plate. The tandoori prawns arrived on a bed of vegetables that were a wee bit scorched, but the flavours came through nonetheless. A delicious meal, served with family friendliness. Would I go back? Definitely!
